The American Language Teachers’ Training Workshop
Report March 18 – 19, 2005
The Howard Plaza Hotel
Taipei, Taiwan
Response from Session B For Secondary School Teachers
1. What did you like best about the workshop?
Summary: Dr. Rowe and Prof. Wormuth were very helpful and easy-going. They did a great job on both instruction provision and PowerPoint presentation. We were separated into groups to discuss Communicative Learning Teaching (CLT), such as including CLT concepts, CLT methodology and CLT barriers, by way of hand-on tasks. Group discussions enabled us to share our own experiences, and expose ourselves to suggestions as well as opinions of others. The workshop provided us with an opportunity to recognize the needs of teachers and students in a more realistic manner. Moreover, Dr. Rowe and Prof. Wormuth provided us with guidance on how to design lessons/activities.
2. What did you like least about the workshop?
Summary: The workshop could have been held for more than two days so Dr. Rowe and Prof. Wormuth could have covered more subjects and we could have undertaken more group discussions. More emphasis should be put on the background knowledge/ theory and evaluation of lesson plans. CLT has been discussed for quite some time so we would like to have opportunities be exposed ourselves to new teaching approaches. The organizer may consider providing participants with snacks or lunches and better environment arrangement. It will be great if more teachers can participate in the future workshop so we will be able to get more feedback.
3. What recommendations do you have for (a) improving this workshop, and (b) future workshops?
-
Workshop should be arranged during summer or winter vacations.
-
The workshop should be a three-day workshop.
-
Let more teachers know about the workshop so teachers all over Taiwan will be able to participate in the workshop by way of, among other things, collaborating with the Ministry of Education.
-
Demonstrate CLT teaching and use real cases to draw comparisons.
-
More emphasis should be put on writing (free writing, good writing), reading and listening, instead of speaking.
-
Separate teachers into three groups, i.e. elementary school, secondary school and post-secondary teachers.
-
Compile the names of participating teachers so we can contact each other.
-
Have more coverage on new teaching approaches.
-
Provide lunch or snack.
-
The location is nice so we love to have workshop there again.
-
Gather the activities created by group members and disseminate to all participants.
-
Have more time to discuss problem-solving and practice/experience sharing.
-
Have faster teaching pace and make recommendation on books.
