Pre-Fair Orientation
On Friday afternoon,
March 23, AIEF conducted a pre-fair orientation for 2011 Fall
AIEF Education Fair participants at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel
in Taipei. Invited speakers were Mr. D.R. Seckinger of the Visa
Section and Ms. Judy Chow, Cultural Officer at the American
Institute in Taiwan. Seckinger addressed the visa application
process in Taiwan and indicated the visa rejection rate has been
less than 3% in Taiwan. Chow gave an overview of the Taiwan’s
educational system as well as a summary of the study abroad
statistics of Taiwan students since 2006. Fair participants at the afternoon pre-fair orientation
Ms. Pearl Wu of AIEF Taipei Office pointed out that the fall
fair is the 38th fair organized by AIEF in Taiwan. At AIEF
Fairs, students have the opportunity to obtain accurate,
up-to-date information directly from authorized school
representatives, Wu said. Citing data from the Open Doors
Report, Wu related that there were 26,685 students from Taiwan
studying in the United States in 2010, making Taiwan the
fifth-leading source of international students in the United
States. Wu also presented the most recent policy change by the
Taiwan Ministry of Education that male students may postpone
their military services by attending the two-year community
colleges or four-year universities and colleges in the United
States. This policy is effective January 2011.
Wu further introduced the resources available at each of the
fair venues and she also recommended several strategies to help
schools bolster their student recruitment efforts in Taiwan,
including supporting AIEF’s campus ambassador program, offering
seminars and visiting local schools, and promoting networking
between U.S. and Taiwan schools.

Fair visitors enjoyed AIEF’s

the academic background and goals of the visiting students, AIEF
counselors provided guidance to students to visit the booths at
the fair venue.
Fair attendees enjoying the wealth of information available at the fairs
At the request of
participating American schools, AIEF provided bilingual
Interpreters to help school representatives to communicate with
visiting students and parents at the fair booths. These
interpreters were selected from local universities through open
competitions and trained by AIEF. In addition, each booth was
provided with one volunteer high school student to help manage
the AIEF’s student tracking system. At the Taipei Fair, the high
school volunteer students were sponsored by the Kang Chiao
Bilingual School, Hui Deng, and Pu Tai Senior High Schools. The
Kaohsiung Fair was sponsored by the I-Sou International High
